Story 1: |
Fullen family lived
at the end of Sycamore: 103, 105 & 107. "They were mostly of
[American] Indian descent, but were treated more like Negroes. They were very
nice people and Granny Fullen was very well respected. One of their
sons [actually a grandson], Richard, graduated from Ohio State University in Agriculture and the
daughters were very beautiful girls." There were also 2 other houses
on Sycamore in 1928 when the Terrace Park Country Club purchased more land
and added 3 more holes. Two of the golf course maintenance men lived
in these houses. One was Mr. Shaw and the other was George
Thompson. George Thompson lived with the Minnick family (Harry
Minnick died March 20,1967 - perhaps in Milford).
(Information from Robert L. Achor, grandson of Gus Worz, 313 Miami.)
See 103 Miami for info on the golf course.
Aaron Fullen was half Cherokee
Indian and half black. His wife, Mary, was Caucasian, which was why
she was able to buy the land in 1907. They had had to leave
Virginia, where they were born, and came first to Batavia (1900 Census) and
then to Terrace Park. Richard was a son of Melvin (son of Aaron &
Mary) & Bertha Fullen. (info from Jim Torrence, Melvin's grandson -
June 2010) |
Story 2: |
From a March 1955 letter written by the Chief of Police
(no doubt Matt Cook) -
"Mr. Arthur Fullen's father and mother moved to Terrace Park about
1905 according to my records. Arthur Fullen has lived here all of
that time. His children went to Terrace Park School and were hard
working and well mannered children. I have known Arthur for
approximately 40 years and he has been a very honest and respectable
citizen. He has worked hard to support his family and is still working
all he is physically able. He is deserving of what ever help can be
given to improve his physical condition. He is in need of an operation
and needs financial help."
Arthur Fullen worked as a chauffeur for a family on
Indian Hill (Drewry Family, 1920 Census) and later worked as a gardener. (Info from Virginia
Marquette)
Children in the Fullen family were Ina (TP High
School class of 1940), Dorothy (TP High School class of 1941), Margie
(married Allen and had a daughter who was on the Shillito's Sewing Board, as
Mariemont's Rep), Betty (disabled) and a boy, Arthur. James Torrence is also in the Fullen family
(I believe he's died.). (Info from Virginia Marquette) |

Story 4: |
A memory from Liz Martin, September 2004. "The
Fullens, a black family, lived on Sycamore. During the 1930s and into the
early 40s one of Mr. Fullen's jobs was mowing the numerous open fields in
the village. To accomplish this he sat behind his horse on a seat to
which was attached 2 wide multibladed scythes. After the cuttings had
dried, Mr. Fullen came again with 2 rakes attached to the seat to collect
the grass, which he then bundled and bailed. I do not recall the
disposition of the bailed hay. Engraved upon my memory to this day
though, is the sweet scent of the new mown hay, which permeated and became a
hallmark of the summer season in Terrace Park." |
