Story 1: |
Information from Childress Rodgers. "In April of 1970 I
moved to 607 Wooster Pike in Terrace Park. My next door neighbors were Edith and
Matt Cook. Mr. & Mrs. Cook were born in this area in the late 1800s and lived
here most of their lives. They were a great source of information about the history
of Terrace Park. These are a few facts that they told me. |
|
Mr. and Mrs. McMullen owned this house and land across the street where
they had a barn and pasture for their horses and cows. The Cooks believed that the
house was built in the late 1800s. When Mr. McMullen (David) died, Mrs. McMullen supported herself
by serving chicken dinners and homemade ice cream on weekends. People came from
Cincinnati on the Swing Line Railroad which ran through Red Bird Hollow to Terrace Park. |
|
So many people were coming that she added a front porch to the house
for an extra dining room. (Evelyn Iuen says the addition must have
been put on between 1912 and 1923 because when she waited tables there in
1923 and 1924 the addition was already there.) Sometimes Mrs. Cook and
her Iuen sisters, Evelyn and Helen, waited tables for Mrs.
McMullen. She was known for having the first fresh garden vegetables of the year and
made her own bread, hot rolls and was famous for her ice cream. Mrs. Virginia
Marquett of 800 Indian Hill Road still has some of Mrs. McMullen's recipes for ice cream
and hot rolls." |
|
The meal served was fried
chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh vegetables, homemade potato
rolls, with angel food cake or ice cream for dessert. Chicken hearts
evidently were not needed for the dinners so they were sent over to the
Cook home next door. Groups of ladies made reservations to come for
lunch and then play cards, mainly bridge, afterwards. Anna
McMullen died November 7, 1933 (info from deeds). |
Story 2: |
McGee on 1939 & 1942 maps. The McMullen
daughter, Leonora, married John Schrimper who had a sister, Mable who
married Frank McGee. After John Schrimper and his sister both died,
Leonora married Frank McGee. Frank S. McGee was
born 30 March 1885 and died 25 December 1972, aged 87 years, buried in
Section 17 of Greenlawn Cemetery, Milford OH, Craver Funeral Home.
John L. Shrimpler was born in 1897 and died 12
April 1934, buried in Section 17 of Greenlawn Cemetery, Milford OH, C. T.
Johnson Funeral Home. |
Story 3: |
Edwin C. Peebles was in TP (not necessarily at this
address) in 1893 & 1895 but not 1887. He was in
Walnut Hills in 1887. Same for Carl Floto, 1st Mayor of TP.
These 2 men need further research starting in City
Directories. |
Story 4: |
John D. McMullen was born 7 October
1869 and died 18 January 1929, aged 59 years. Who is he? Anna McMullen was born
26 July 1869 and died 7 November 1933. Both are buried in Section 16 of Greenlawn
Cemetery, Milford OH, C. T. Johnson Funeral Home. (There must be some
mistake with David's dates?) |
Story 5: |
